Tyre Fitting Service
Fitting tyres does not usually take long, though we do ask that you call to book your tyre fitting in advance. This is simply because our tyres are supplied to order and we try not to keep our customers waiting any longer than they have to. By calling ahead we can make sure that we have the correct tyre(s) available and ready to be fitted onto your vehicle when you arrive.
As part of the tyre fitting service we will of course check to ensure you have the correct tyres fitted, that the balance of your tyres is adjusted correctly and that they are inflated to the correct tyre pressures. This helps to ensure that when the tyre and the wheel spin, their weight is equally distributed and your tyres grip and wear evenly. You may also wish to consider have your vehicles wheel alignment checked, and if need be adjusted – for more information please read below.

Tyre Safety & The Law
It is always important to check your tyres on a regular basis; not just for safety reasons, but because if they fall below the legal requirements, you may find yourself with penalty points and a heavy fine ( per tyre), if you are stopped by the police.
Essentially the law in the UK requires that your vehicle is fitted with the right size and type of tyre, that they are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure, that they are free from defects and that they are fit for the purpose that vehicle is being used for.
The minimum legal limit for the depth of the tread on your tyres is 1.6 mm, which must be consistent across the central three quarters of the tread and around the complete circumference of each tyre.
Motorcycles, large vehicles and passenger-carrying vehicles MUST have a tread depth of at least 1 mm across three-quarters of the breadth of the tread and in a continuous band around the entire circumference.
This is of course the minimum legal requirement, but for safety reasons it is advisable to replace your tyres before the legal limit is reached. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing your tyres when the tread is around 3 millimetres. We strongly advise a regular check of your tyres to help you avoid receiving 3 penalty points and a £2,500 fine for each tyre on your vehicle that is worn beyond the legal minimum limit.
Having different tyre brands or patterns of the same construction type is permissible depending on the vehicle type and manufacturers recommendation. It is however a legal requirement to ensure that tyres of different types of construction (eg. radial and cross-ply) are not fitted to opposing ends of the same axle.
It is always advisable to check your vehicle’s handbook for details.
SLP Autos provide this information purely as a guide. For accurate, up-to-date information on tyre safety and the legal requirements please visit the .gov.uk website.
